I’ve taught 10,000+ designers and non-designers about the importance of design, not as an afterthought, but as the beating heart of every successful business.
Design is the differentiator that sets apart an increasing number of the world’s leading businesses. That’s not just my opinion, it’s the market’s too.
It’s no coincidence that the world’s first $1.5 Trillion dollar company was Apple and it bears emphasising that the company hit this remarkable milestone in the midst of a global pandemic that’s been truly unprecedented.
And yet…
Across a career spanning three decades as a designer – working for companies large (Electronic Arts) and small (The School of Design) – the answer to one question still eludes me: What is design? And how does an understanding of design shape our wider thinking?
Of course, I could give you a simple answer, but that answer wouldn’t encompass everything we now need to consider under the umbrella of design. It would also be outdated the moment I uttered it.
The world of design and business is changing so fast.
Every week I share the lessons I’ve learned working at the edges of a constantly evolving industry as: a design consultant; and a design researcher. Join me as I focus on designing thinking.
